ADHD Drugs Causing Side Effects
Many college students are not at all worried about ADHD drugs causing side effects when they are hell bent on cheating and gaining an unfair advantage by taking a stimulant med to study all night. But research shows that the actual benefits are not that evident at all and also there will be an individual reaction (depending on their genetic makeup) which will determine just how successful these meds could be in making a student smarter.
But the research shows that the actual benefits may be limited to those areas of the brain which require an extended memory – eg. facts learned by rote. But when it comes to being able to reason and to explain why A leads to B, then the pills will not have much effect as we are dealing with the innermost regions of the brain which will be unaffected by a mere stimulant med.
Side effects of Adderall and other meds used illegally can lead to psychosis and suicidal thoughts as evidenced by the tragic cases of Kyle Craig and Richard Fee who both committed suicide. But many suburban mothers are also popping these pills in order to keep up with the multitude of tasks that they face. The elated feeling that they can cope leads to misuse and eventually addiction and nobody ever talks about this.
But apart from this, what about ADHD drugs causing side effects in those people who really need to take them so that they can focus, become less impulsive and also be able to stay on task? These people are dependent to an exaggerated degree on these meds which is why it is wise to consider
what those side effects could be.
What are the side effects that we can expect? The documentation on the fact that children may:-
If your doctor or paediatrician is wise and follows AAP, CDC and NIMH guidelines, he is going to recommend that some other types of treatment are tried before resorting to meds. These could include a revolution in the home organization and the routine, behavior therapy and special arrangements at school under the IEP or equivalent accommodations.
The main thing to consider are the non drug interventions that I have mentioned above before trying medication but sometimes meds are needed to calm a child down. There is no one size fits all and that is why each child with ADHD has to be assessed individually.
